Hundreds of Rebuilding Together Volunteers to Revitalize 15 Homes in Cleveland and McFerrin Park Neighborhoods

National and local sponsors join Rebuilding Together for Building a Healthy Neighborhood project in East Nashville

NASHVILLE, TN, May 27, 2014 – Hundreds of Rebuilding Together volunteers will descend upon the Cleveland and McFerrin Park neighborhoods May 29-31 to provide critical repairs to 15 homes, install a new playground and help revitalize the East Nashville community.

This work is made possible through the generous support of many national and local sponsors including Lowe’s, Carter’s Kids Foundation, CBRE, Crate and Barrel, HGTV, DIY Network, Mass Mutual, Assurant, LP Building Products, Sun Trust Foundation, First Tennessee Foundation, WSMV-TV and the West End Home Foundation.

“You can be proud of your neighborhood when you see everybody getting together, and the work is being done,” said Jewell. Project homeowner Jewell has lived in her house for many years. With the loss of her husband, she has not been able to maintain the 1920’s home. The windows are drafty, the doors don’t seal properly.  Jewell is unable to vacuum because of physical limitations and is fearful of tripping on loose cords and worn carpet. Jewell’s home will receive new flooring, the windows will be weatherized, doors will be replaced, electrically issues will be addressed and security lights will be installed.

Homeowners being served include many families who have lived in the community for more than 40 years and are aging in place. Some of the homeowners have physical disabilities and are in need of accessibility modifications.

The volunteers will assist with flooring repairs and replacement, weatherization repairs, roof and handrail replacements, other major home rehabilitations, accessibility modifications, painting and landscaping.

“We so appreciate the dedication of all the volunteers and the financial contributions of our generous sponsors, without whom this critical work could not be completed,” said Charley Shimanski, president and CEO of Rebuilding Together.  “We are honored to be in Nashville to demonstrate the positive effects of safe and healthy housing on homeowners and in the community.”

The Building a Healthy Neighborhood mission is to demonstrate the positive effects of home and neighborhood revitalization on the overall health of homeowners, families and communities. For more information, go to www.rebuildingtogether.org/bahn
