Rebuilding Together, Meals on Wheels and Spectrum Collaborate to Distribute Safe and Healthy Home Kits to Seniors in Need

Kits include home safety materials and literature to positively contribute to health of residents

Washington, D.C., August 26, 2020 – Rebuilding Together, the leading national non-profit organization that provides critical home repairs to individuals in need at no cost to them and revitalizes communities throughout the country, will distribute more than 4,000 Safe and Healthy Home Kits to seniors as part of a collaborative partnership with Meals on Wheels America and its long-time corporate partner, Charter Communications Inc., through its brand Spectrum.

Safe & Healthy Home Kits, provided at no cost to the recipient, educate individuals on safe and healthy housing to improve safety, which ultimately impacts their health. The kits promote the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s “Eight Principles of Safe and Healthy Housing” and provide materials direct to consumers that empower them to make their homes safer and healthier. Each kit contains a first aid kit, night light, smoke alarm, carbon monoxide tester, cleaning solution, caulk, weather stripping, DampRid®, a weather radio, lead information, and a maintenance checklist.

“At this time, more than any other, our Safe and Healthy Home Kits are an invaluable resource to our communities,” said Rahman Khan, Vice President of Community Impact for Charter. “We will continue to work alongside our partners to identify those in need and helping seniors through Meals on Wheels is a valuable way to fulfill our commitment to the communities we serve.”

As part of the Spectrum Housing Assist program, a philanthropic initiative providing critical home repairs across the country, Spectrum, has invested more than $10 million in Rebuilding Together’s mission-critical initiatives. Spectrum is on track to meet its goal of improving 50,000 homes by the end of 2020; currently with more than 42,000 homes improved.

Meals on Wheels America is the leadership organization supporting more than 5,000 community-based programs across the country that are dedicated to addressing senior isolation and hunger. The Safe and Healthy Home Kits, which were created, assembled and provided by Spectrum and Rebuilding Together, will further Meals on Wheels’ mission of improving the health and quality of life of the seniors they serve.

“We have found the kits we have distributed over the last four years in collaboration with Charter to have a significant impact on our neighbors’ lives,” said Caroline Blakely, President and CEO of Rebuilding Together. They are equipped with products to help them stay safe and healthy in their homes. This is more important than ever as seniors continue to be at the greatest risk amid the COVID-19 pandemic.”
