Rebuilding Together Northern Nevada hosted its first National Rebuilding Day on Saturday, April 24th to mark the end of Rebuilding Together’s annual month-long call to service—National Rebuilding Month. We were excited to get started on projects since we are one of the newest affiliates in the Rebuilding Together network. Two neighbors were selected, one in Reno and one in Sparks, for yard clean up and removal of unwanted items and debris. One neighbor received a new fence and a front yard deck along with the addition of new lighting, flowers and a nice place to sit and relax. Over 45 volunteers pitched in to help make a difference which included Spark Councilmembers Donald Abbott and Dian VanderWell, board members and friends, and two large teams of outstanding employees from one of our corporate partners. National Rebuilding Month originated in 1973 in Midland, Texas with volunteers teaming up to help a neighbor rebuild their home. The group eventually founded Rebuilding Together, once named “Christmas in April,” and gathered around a month of service each year in April. The mission quickly grew beyond the idea of providing service one month per year to bringing volunteers together to provide neighbors in need with critical repairs year-round. Today, we are proud to be one of over 120 Rebuilding Together affiliates working to safely serve neighbors in need of home repairs—not just in April, but year-round. This past National Rebuilding Day was a proud day for all, and we are looking forward to National Rebuilding Month projects for years to come!
