Don't Throw Away a Perfectly Good Home

You wouldn't throw away a perfectly good TV because you lost the remote. You wouldn't tear down a wall because someone scuffed the paint. You'd fix it. 

So why are we letting perfectly good homes quietly disappear simply because they need repairs? 

I ask that question a lot these days, because the answer matters more than ever. Across the country, families are losing their forever homes not because the houses are beyond saving, but because they can't afford the repairs that would make them livable again. A roof that leaks a little more each season. A front step that becomes impossible to climb. A furnace that finally gives out. One by one, these homes slip out of reach, and with them go the stability, memories, and futures of the people who live there. 

Every home we don't save makes the housing crisis even harder to solve. But it doesn't have to be that way. 

The most affordable housing is the housing we already have 

When we talk about America's housing crisis, the conversation usually turns to building. We absolutely need new homes. But new building alone will not get us out of this crisis. We need to rebuild our existing aging housing stock.  

Rebuilding Together has been the premiere organization working to rebuild homes across this country for almost 40 years. We know how to rebuild homes and keep people from being displaced. At Rebuilding Together, we know the smartest way to address the housing crisis is by safeguarding the homes we already have. Instead of replacing homes, we repair them. We make them safer, more accessible, and more affordable to maintain for the neighbors who need it most: veterans, older adults, people with disabilities, and low-income families. 

One new house, or 18 repaired homes 

Here's the number that I can't stop thinking about, and that I hope sticks with you too: for the same cost as building one new house, Rebuilding Together can repair 18 existing homes. 

Eighteen families kept safely housed. Eighteen homes preserved as affordable housing. Eighteen families who get to stay rooted in their communities. Eighteen families changed not just for one day, but sometimes for generations.  

That's the idea behind Fix18. It's a simple, practical case for a smarter path forward, one where we treat existing homes as the valuable resource they are. 

Homes are worth fixing 

I've seen what a single repair can do. Every roof patched helps keep a family safely housed. Every accessible ramp helps a neighbor live independently. Every repaired home safeguards affordable housing that might otherwise disappear forever. 

None of this happens by accident. It happens because people choose to invest in smart, cost-effective solutions that make our communities stronger. It happens because volunteers pick up tools, because partners commit their resources and expertise, because advocates make the case to decision makers, and because donors believe their dollars should go as far as possible.
