On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina forever changed New Orleans. The storm revealed significant vulnerabilities within the city, leaving countless families struggling to rebuild their lives. In the years since, the term “resilient” has frequently been used to describe the people of New Orleans, reflecting both their strength and their struggles.

On the 20th anniversary of Katrina, Rebuilding Together New Orleans and the United Way of Southeast Louisiana will unveil the new United Way of Southeast Louisiana Resiliency Center, a project founded by Rebuilding Together New Orleans. This storm-hardened facility is more than just a building; it represents a promise to the community that resilience doesn’t have to mean surviving alone.

The Resiliency Center redefines what resilience means. Rather than expecting families to recover in isolation after a disaster, the Center provides the community with resources, tools and partnerships to be prepared before the next storm strikes. By uniting organizations such as the United Way of Southeast Louisiana, HandsOn New Orleans, Ride NOLA, New Orleans ToolBank and LA Green Corps under one roof, the Center creates a collaborative hub for disaster preparedness, financial stability, housing support and educational opportunities.

This space is designed not only for emergencies but also for growth. Community workshops, training sessions and collaboration among nonprofits will help families strengthen their financial foundations, improve access to housing and expand opportunities, all crucial elements for building true resilience. The unveiling will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony with both national and local leaders, followed by guided tours of the facility and a citywide day of service led by Rebuilding Together New Orleans and Entergy. Together, volunteers will continue the vital work of repairing homes and strengthening neighborhoods across New Orleans.

20 years ago, Katrina exposed what was broken. Today, the Resiliency Center illustrates what is possible. By investing in preparedness and collaboration, New Orleans is paving the way for a future where resilience means thriving, not just surviving.
