When Help Arrives Just in Time: Anita's Story

For 25 years, Anita Richardson has called her North Nashville house home. A  place filled with love, laughter and generations of family. But over time, her home began to show its age. With limited income and two young children to care for, Anita struggled to afford costly repairs. Then, one day, help arrived right when she needed it most.

When Anita’s granddaughter noticed a Rebuilding Together Nashville sign in a neighbor’s yard, she reached out to learn more. That simple conversation set in motion what Anita now calls “a blessing beyond measure.” Soon, a team of volunteers and staff arrived at her home to make critical repairs, from replacing floors and cabinets to installing a new walk-in shower. “When they started in the kitchen, I was elated to say the least,” Anita said. “I just thought I had a brand-new house.”

For Anita, these repairs are more than updates; they’re peace of mind. With a safer, more accessible home, she can continue caring for her great-niece and great-nephew, both of whom she’s raised since infancy.

Born and raised in Nashville, Anita has spent her life giving back. As the oldest of six, she was always the one helping to care for others: her siblings, her own children and the many kids she taught throughout her career in early childhood education. She even ran a daycare from her home and volunteered with organizations like the Peace Corps. “Always give to others,” Anita shared. “Because you never know who you’re truly blessing. These people have blessed me so richly; I still cry just thinking that someone was there when I really needed it most.”

For homeowners like Anita, a safe and healthy home makes all the difference. Thanks to Rebuilding Together Nashville, she can now focus on what matters most: family, faith and the quiet joys that fill her days.
