For the Lopez family in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, home has always been a place they’ve shared. Sergio and his family have lived there for 14 years, but over time, the bathroom became a source of real concern. After slipping and falling more than once, Sergio said he felt afraid every morning when it was time to take a shower. Lifting his left leg was difficult and the fear of falling backward was always there.

His family also shared that fear. Sergio’s wife, Maria, remembers how stressful it was knowing he could get hurt. She says that now, after a bathroom repair and modification completed by Rebuilding Together Sandoval County, everything feels different. Sergio can shower safely and the constant worry is gone. “He’s okay now,” she said. “He can go in and take a shower and he’s as happy as he can be.”

Their daughter, Soniria, said the whole family used to feel nervous whenever Sergio bathed. Today, that anxiety has been replaced with relief and gratitude. “Now we are very happy,” she shared. “We’re very satisfied with the way we were treated. The service was really good.”
