Pushing Through Tough Times to Revitalize Our Community
One day. Over 100 volunteers. 150 kits distributed.
This was simply the most successful first annual Healthy Housing Harvest Party we could have asked for. After a challenging year due to the pandemic, our community needed something positive. In October, Rebuilding Together Southeast Michigan held a giant, socially distanced park clean up in Detroit.
On this day, we hosted around 150 volunteers to serve the community. Volunteers revitalized Chandler Park through tasks like weeding, raking, cleaning the football field, picking up trash and more. Volunteers also ran a safe and healthy home kit distribution where residents of Detroit could drive up and receive a bucket filled with items to keep them a bit safer at home: a fire extinguisher, smoke and carbon monoxide detector, DampRid, window insulation, pest traps and masks. We sent a team of volunteers to a home repair project close to the park where they helped rebuild a neighbor’s porch steps, install a new mailbox and cleaned up the yard.
This event was inspiring to our staff to see that even through challenging times, we can still get people to come together and help our community. We are looking forward to putting on many similar events in the future!
