October is National Energy Awareness Month, a time to recognize how energy shapes our daily lives and how small improvements can make a significant difference for our wallets, our health and our environment.

At Rebuilding Together, we know that energy efficiency is more than just a buzzword. For many of the neighbors we serve, high utility bills can mean choosing between heating their homes or putting food on the table. Inefficient systems not only waste energy but also strain family budgets and compromise health and safety.

That’s why our repairs often go beyond fixing what’s broken. By adding insulation, sealing drafts or installing energy-efficient appliances and lighting, we help ensure homes are not only safer but also more affordable and sustainable in the long run.

Energy awareness starts with the choices we make at home. Here are a few small steps anyone can take to make their space more energy efficient:

  • Seal it up: Check doors and windows for leaks. Weatherstripping can make an impact on heating and cooling costs.

  • Upgrade your lighting: Switching to LED bulbs uses up to 90% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs.

  • Think smart: A programmable thermostat can help reduce energy waste by automatically adjusting temperatures when you’re away or asleep.

  • Unplug and save: Electronics and chargers still use energy when not in use. Remember to unplug them to cut costs.

This month, let’s shine a light on the importance of energy efficiency. Not just for our planet, but for our communities.
