Sharing the Importance of Home on National Rebuilding Day

Last Saturday was National Rebuilding Day, a day that Rebuilding Together affiliates look forward to every year. Under normal circumstances, thousands of volunteers would have gathered in communities across the country to repair around 3,000 homes of our neighbors in need.

We never could have anticipated this April would be so different. In lieu of volunteering, we showcased the work our affiliates do year-round to make homes and communities safer and healthier, challenged [Re]Builders to use their time at home to make simple repairs , encouraged everyone to engage in online conversations about the importance of safe and healthy housing and share memories through photos of previous National Rebuilding Days.

While rebuild projects were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, we are pleased that [Re]Builders came together virtually to amplify an important message: everyone deserves a safe home and community.

Jazz pianist, Senri Oe, composed this song, “Home”, in honor of National Rebuilding Month. Like us, Senri believes that everyone deserves to live in safe and healthy home.

Perry Bird, regional director at Rebuilding Together’s national office, reflected on his first National Rebuilding Day project in New Orleans 26 years ago.

Rebuilding Together Dutchess County shared a video encouraging [Re]Builders to brush up on home repair skills by participating in the #HomeRepairChallenge.

In celebration of National Rebuilding Day, Rebuilding Together staff and affiliates came together to share their favorite memories of past rebuild projects.

We have all been reminded of the importance of home recently since many Americans are currently under shelter-in-place orders. As National #RebuildingMonth is ending, we are thankful for the many memoires of past rebuilding months and our [Re]Builders who continue to support our neighbors in need during these unprecedented times.
